: BARBARA SKLAR : Dealer of Fine Acquisitions & precious Metals
Barbara Sklar has been in the auction/antique business for over 26 years. At age 16 she worked her first auction, held at the local Marriot Hotel in Northern NJ.
She was absolutely amazed by the amount of excitement generated at the auction. Watching what she considered 'ordinary' items sell to an enthusiastic crowd of bidders for thousands of dollars absolutely astounded her! It only took moments for her to realize that those "ordinary" items she had mistaken for "junk" while walking through homes of friends, family and neighbors were actually sought after "antiques and collectibles".
By age 19, Barbara found herself in yet another avenue of the antique business. This time her job was to travel throughout the northeast seeking antique furniture at local garage sales. Long Island was her favorite hotspot to find great buys! Every two weeks, she would travel to Texas to auction off the garage sale finds....Let's just say, she watched as an 'ordinary' end table that she purchased for $75.00, auction to the winning bidder at almost $5,000!!!
The education she received on 'market value' was quite valuable. She recognized the art of Fine Acquisitions and decided to go back to school and obtain her Real Estate License to add to her knowledge base.
In 1994 the main focus of the family's business was in precious metals, coins and stamps. Barbara brought to the table her knowledge of antiques and collectibles, estate liquidation and auction experience. The family business expanded and flourished however, her focus was on raising her children and turning a hobby into a career by establishing herself as a sought after fashion & celebrity event photographer.
In 2006, successful fashion photographer Barbara Sklar, recognized that her love of antiques and collectibles was calling her back yet again. With the encouragement of her mother, brother and partner, she decided to open a quaint little shop in Waldwick, NJ.
Initially the shop was going to be exclusively antiques and collectibles however, with the rising excitement in the coin market and gold prices at a high, she decided Coins and Collectibles would make for a most interesting store. Hence, Bergen County Coin & Collectibles was born in NJ.
Soon after, she decided to relocate the family to the gorgeous Hudson Valley ,NY. It was here she decided to open Gallery of New York & Barbara Sklar Productions.

Estate Sale Professionals
An Estate Sale is a type of garage sale, yard sale or auction to dispose of the majority of the materials owned by a person who is deceased or will be moving. Estate sales are usually conducted by a professional, for a percentage of the revenues. This is because the scope of the process is usually overwhelming to the survivors, and for the specialist's experience with pricing antique items, his or her following of customers, and the specialist's experience in disposing of unsold goods in an unsentimental manner after the run of the sale. Antique and collectible dealers use estate sales as one of their more important wholesale sources. Estate sales are typically 1 to 3 days long, often with a price reduction toward the end.
Antiques or Collectibles?
Antiques are commonly defined as anything over 100 years old. Many antiques shops today typically have a large percentage of inventory also made in the 20th century. Instead of merely considering the age of an item, many antique dealers choose an item based on its design, workmanship and rarity. Examples of items in this category are art noveau furniture, pottery, glass, jewelry from the turn of the century through the 1940's, and Tiffany silver produced in this century.
Collectibles, is a term used to distinguish more recent items from antiques. Denoting "popular" culture, collectibles are anything that people collect, mostly things that were part of everyday life in a bygone era now fondly remembered. There are thousands of categories, but some examples would include coins, memorabilia made in the 70s, children's toys, lunch boxes, old movie memorabilia and comics books. It can also refer to "limited edition" collectibles. Those are things manufactured and marketed specifically as collectibles as in collector's plates and Franklin mint items.
